 What is Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will.

The Problem

Human trafficking is an estimated $150 billion global industry. It is an abuse of power exploiting the vulnerability and desperation of others. Victim vulnerabilities can include poverty, abusive home life, trusting manipulative people, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Illiteracy, lack of job opportunities, and regional conflicts are all contributors.

The Solution

In 2000, the U.S. Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, establishing what is now called the 3Ps: punish traffickers, protect victims, and prevent this problem from reoccurring. While there is no easy solution, there are proactive options at all levels from government to grassroots. Educate! Education is a part of the foundation for change. Communities can offer education on what human trafficking is, how to look for signs of victims, and insist on communication among neighbors, educators, and policy makers. Improving formal education can make people less vulnerable to trafficking. Advocate! Reach out to policy makers to reduce or control the sex industry. Donate! Clothes, food, and goods can be donated to local charities that support victims. Combat! Combat the demand. Take a stand against prostitution and pornography.
